The mechanics were too much like Final Fantasy 2 and the lack of pure RPG aspects gave me an overwhelming sense of "meh". So I'm moving onto my next console game. Perhaps I can sell this one or something, but I can't see ever wanting to pop it in again.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-46908805144698786392012-02-26T19:23:00.003-05:002012-02-26T19:23:51.367-05:00Dungeon Defenders
This wasn't my next game on the list, but it had me addicted for a solid three weeks or so. There's the routine tower-defense strategy in this game, but it adds a bunch of loot drops, substantially different classes, rpg elements and multiple ways to approach each level.

It's also multiplayer, so Naomi and I played a game for a few minutes. Unfortunately, I lost interest recently due to the rather small amount of levels and no total conversion mods available for it yet. EDF 2017 gave me a much better incentive to grind out through all the difficulty levels, since there were unique weapons you could only get from those levels, as opposed to randomly generated loot drops in this game.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-39742660884968224672012-02-23T16:24:00.000-05:002012-02-23T16:24:11.367-05:00Hexyz Force; e3I decided to stop playing altogether. The lack of weapon and armor selections, the "speak to everyone" requirement of progressing the game, the frustrating map situation, on and on.... The story was great, but the sense of progress was numb or non-existent. Being on a portable platform isn't a valid excuse, either, e.g. Etrian Odyssey, Nostalgia, Dragon Quest Rocket Slime, Pokemon etc.

These all give the player a sense of "Hey! I improved my situation marginally in the 20 minutes I've been playing". Hexyz Force gave you a sense of "Hey! I have been looking around this confusing map for twenty minutes looking for all the members of my party hidden about this area so I can talk to them in order to progress the game!" Not enjoyable, I'm done with it. Looking forward to the next game on the to-play list. Probably next week at the laundry, as usual.

Just started this after I finished up what I wanted from Earth Defense Force 2017. It's an action rpg that has a certain charm to it, with graphics not unlike Guardian's Crusade which is fine with me (loved that game). Since I had the strategy guide, I'll be using it, since the old adage "play through it once without a guide then use it the next playthrough" doesn't cut it in your thirties.

You have the choice of two characters' stories to choose from, and one of them, Rue, has the ability to transform into different monsters using "monster coins". This adds some strategy to the puzzle-solving aspects of the game I guess. That's how I've read the back at least. No experience points to speak of, but it works a but like FF2 in that the more you get hit the higher your max HP goes and likewise with your MP.

I'm rather optimistic about this game so far, we'll see how it pans out. Either way, it's refreshing to play another PS1 RPG.

Every chest I open is at best some synthesis part that allows me to create some weapon that will break and become useless within an hour of play, if that. I'll do my best to suffer through this game but I'm not promising anything.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-31990378830862506282012-02-04T09:16:00.002-05:002012-02-04T09:16:52.155-05:00Earth Defense Force 2017; e2After 60 hours of gameplay, I still haven't beaten it. I've gotten through Easy, Normal, Hard and halfway through Hardest. They managed to strip everything glorious and enjoyable about the franchise and turn it into a cock-sucker's fantasy. Hence, it has been Bethesdad - a great franchise taken over by western frat boy developers and turned into a steaming pile of shit. I will be returning it today. Until EDF4 trailers come out to ensure that it hasn't got fucked over by American kiddy developers, I'll move on to my next game in queue since I beat EDF 2017.

Also, I've heard rumor that a TRUE EDF4 is in development. That would be great news. This game is addicting as hell. It's a third person sci-fi shooter comprised of 52 stages and 5 difficulty levels. There's vehicles to ride (tanks, helicopters, airbikes, mech suits), tons of weapons to unlock, and a ton of strategies/weapon combinations to try out for each level.

I just beat the Normal campaign and will be doing a Hard run to unlock more weapons hopefully. Then I'll be doing an Easy run to beef up my health via the Armor drops before attempting a Hardest. Not sure about Inferno yet. Might just switch over to Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon at that time.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-35431952442772406532012-01-15T19:45:00.000-05:002012-02-05T15:53:59.306-05:00Hexyz Force; e1J16.081 STI
Seems like a good game so far. It has your usual paper-rock-scissors JRPG elements. When I first saw durability on ANYthing in this game and crafting, I almost stopped. But the main weapons aren't breakable so I kept on.
There seems to be a field skill of sorts where you can use Force to uncover secret item caches and God knows I love me some exploration. Still trying to figure out the element circle. Think I'll stick with a simple web log. Like this. I know, I know - "What about keeping in touch with people blah blah blah?" WELL. The only type of contact you get on FaceNutz is usually VilleVilleTown requests. EVEN WHEN you sent a message. The problem is the layout I think, since FaceNutz is an ADHD's dream and has 45 ways to communicate - wall, status update, like, comment, etc... The "message" feature (which is never used) is almost fucking hidden behind all the panels. I honestly need a sherpa to navigate that shithole.
Still working at Global Foundries, getting used to the office politics and just the overall environment. I still have anxiety attacks about job security stemming from my horrible stint with IT/my entire life; but I'm gradually adjusting.
Almost done with my student loan settlement payoff - I did $600 a month for a year, the last payment will be February. Then I'll be getting a 2010 Buick Lucerne! Cannot f@#$ing wait. In addition, I'll be selling Steve my car so it's helping both of us. Also, Naomi and I have been losing weight, I'm down to 211 right now from 250 which was my heaviest.

I'll try to get back into the swing of posting here more often, but I honestly don't feel the need to post/tweet every little detail of my life. That, and I'd rather post, you know, INTERESTING things. Unfortunately, I'm not an international man of mystery and don't have extraordinary adventures to write about like all those trust-fund kiddies. I've decided (with the help of the "Slow Movement" and some Zen teachings) to single-task, take them on one at a time.
Parallel to the project schedule, I've decided to play all the friggin games in my collection, since there's way too many that I haven't even fired up yet in my 10 year collecting craze. I'll be posting stuff about it under the tag "game journal", which will also help me generate some material for ANOTHER future project I got lined up.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-24111243126435148052011-09-22T13:16:00.003-04:002012-01-06T10:18:31.185-05:00Spam-A-Lot
Not because I've softened up, but I know that even with the NLRB's efforts, employees can still get canned at-will for anything they post online. That, and I'm not sure how many people I know are misinformed and would get their panties in a bind from my opinions. Just avoiding the inevitable. If you'd like to read some "inappropriate" opinions, let me know and I might send you a link to the files. They do exist.
I've also removed the 800+ articles I published from RSS feeds with the exception of those I commented on.
As usual, my pile of personal projects is piling up - I've got 3 books, 3 board games, 1 database, 1 videogame text dump and probably a few others floating around. Anyone interested in a non-paid assistant position, let me know!Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671267065222851386.post-7617453417339321442010-12-06T07:59:00.001-05:002011-09-22T10:45:06.209-04:0010 ways OneNote 2010 can make you more productiveDave's Take: I've actually weaned myself off of Melon Pro and ShirisuPad in favor of OneNote. It's a great note-keeping tool. At first I was miffed at the OneNote tray icon only taking "unsorted notes" that I would have to manually cut and paste in OneNote itself. I just had the tray icon open the whole damn program, problem solved. Now all I need to do is find a document scanning app that doesn't suck as bad as PaperPort 12.
10 ways OneNote 2010 can make you more productive: "
Wouldn’t it be nice to simply think great thoughts and have your computer following along behind you, automatically recording them? Well, maybe not all your thoughts, but at least your best ones. OneNote 2010 comes close to being the type of electronic assistant that helps you capture, organize, and share great ideas, whether you’re writing on napkins or whiteboards, singing or doodling, browsing the Web or writing new content. Here are some ways you can put OneNote to work.

Note: This article is also available as a PDF download.

1: Let it flow

Many of us suffered through English class early in our school careers, where a well-intentioned teacher showed us the “right” way to take notes (and then checked our notebooks to make sure we were doing it correctly). But when we get out into the real work world, we soon learned the truth: There’s no one right way to take notes. The objective, of course, is to capture your good ideas in a form that makes them easy for you to find and use later. And that’s one of the things OneNote 2010 is best at.

You can capture your notes in whatever form you record them — as doodles or sketches, as audio clips or pieces of Web pages — and just put them on the page, free-form, in any order that makes sense to you. You can create notebooks that have sections and individual pages within those sections, and you even have an unfiled category where you can store notes until you’re ready to put them somewhere. The whole process is painless and flexible, and you can just relax and let your ideas flow.

2: Find your notes quickly

Of course, once you capture all this information, you need an easy way to find it later. Otherwise, what good is taking all those notes? Luckily, OneNote 2010 includes a powerful indexed search feature that enables you to search your notebooks using a word or a phrase. You can also search notes added by specific authors (when you’re working with a shared notebook). Simply click in the Search All Notebooks box just below the Ribbon on the right side of the screen and begin typing your search word. The search engine will instantly locate all the notes with the letters you enter (Figure A). You can choose to search by notebook, by information type, or by topic or page.

OneNote makes it easy to search quickly for content in your notebooks.

3: Add all kinds of content

OneNote easily accepts all sorts of notes from all sorts of places. If you prefer to brainstorm out loud, you can add an audio note to your page. If you want to capture a snippet of a PowerPoint presentation you’re creating as a video, you can add that video clip to your notebook. You can also include scans of documents, attach files, link to Web pages, and add tables, pictures, screenshots, and more. All the tools you need for adding content to your pages are in the Insert tab. Oh, and of course you can simply click on the page and type or draw your ideas in that nice blank space.

4: Navigate easily

The question of whether you want to create multiple notebooks to store notes in various categories or create many sections within one or two notebooks to keep everything together in one place is often a matter of personal style. If you have several notebooks, you can manage them easily and move back and forth by using the Notebooks panel on the left side of the screen. By default, the panel is closed so that you see a vertical strip showing various notebook names. But if you click the Expand Navigation Bar arrow at the top of the panel, it expands so that you can see the names of the various notebooks and pages available to you (Figure B). Simply click the page you want to view and it appears in the work area.

Figure B

You can easily move from notebook to notebook while you work.

5: Grab notes as you go

OneNote 2010 is connected to Word and PowerPoint so that you can easily capture what you’re creating in those programs and post the content directly to your notebook. This creates a link to your notes so that you always have them nearby when you’re working on that particular project, making it easy to check your source information for things like spelling, statistics, and quotes. You’ll find the Linked Notes feature in Word and in PowerPoint in the Review tab. When you click it, the Select Location In OneNote dialog box appears so that you can choose the notebook, section, and page you want to link to the Word page or PowerPoint slide.

6: Clip keepers from the Web

You can also grab items of interest from Web pages you browse. Begin by highlighting the information you want to keep and then right-click your selection. Choose Send To OneNote from the bottom of the list. Specify where in OneNote you want to save the information, and the program pastes the information and creates a link to the original page so that you can return there later if you choose.

7: Doodle away

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just get tired of typing. It’s freeing — and can get a creative vibe going — when I can sketch or diagram or doodle on the page. OneNote includes a great palette of drawing tools you can use to add more free-form content to your pages (Figure C). If you have a drawing tablet, you can use these tools to fine-tune the stylus settings. But if not, you can turn the pointer into a marker, highlighter, or pen or insert shapes and connect them using the various drawing tools.

Figure C

The Drawing tools in OneNote help you be creative with doodles and diagrams.

8: View it your way

OneNote is designed to be as flexible as possible (because we think and capture our thoughts in different ways). So it’s important to be able to customize how view your notes in a way that makes sense for you. The View tab offers a number of tools that give you choice about the notes you view onscreen. You can zoom in and out, create new windows, dock OneNote on your desktop, create a side note, format the note page in different ways, or elect to keep the current note page on top. The Dock To Desktop and Full Page tools are included by default on the Quick Access Toolbar so that you can move among these views easily without needing to click the View tab in the Ribbon.

9: Share your ideas

More and more, we are working in a collaborative workspace. Whether your colleagues are down the hall or around the world, you can create a shared OneNote notebook that they can access, add to, and use. In the Share tab, you’ll find tools for emailing a workbook, creating a new shared workbook, reviewing page versions, and finding content based on the authors who provided it. Using tools in the Info tab of Backstage view, you can also start sharing, sync the notebook with a Web version, or stop sharing the notebook with others.

10: Keep it safe, too

Of course, sharing a notebook and perhaps emailing it to others raises the issue of security. You won’t feel secure enough to be creative if you’re worried about others intercepting your good ideas. You can password-protect sections to ensure that only those you want to see the content have access to your material. Choose the password settings you want to apply by clicking the File tab, clicking Options, and clicking the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Passwords section and click the check boxes that reflect the way you want to use passwords in your notebooks. This provides the best of all worlds: a safe space for your notes, flexible tools for creating them, and easy, fast ways to capture what you create. When you add your own creative energy to the mix, good things are sure to happen.
Had to listen to some overpaid bullshit artist (marketing consultant) make a presentation. Well, at the beginning he pulled out an iPad which apparently had his slide show on it. Tried hooking it up to any technology whatsoever (a projector) and HOLY SHIT didn't get video signal. He'd have better luck in some Greenwich Village art studio, maybe? O wait Apple's h/w costs so much in order to be hip and popular so even the artists couldn't afford it. Fag. As if anyone besides me fucking reads this. Hell it's more like a personal journal I keep hidden under the floorboards. Anyways, just in case I print this blog out and nail it to your door; I've been taking classes to finish up my A.A.S in the hopes to get a job, as I just turned 30. Just saw Louis CK! Awesome show. Being married is a definite assistance to college, since I don't have the distraction of girls and being the class clown. One of the games I got was Dungeon Wonder or something. Within the first 5 seconds of the tutorial they mentioned weapon durability. I uninstalled it immediately. For people over 20 who have actually had the ambition to play GOOD video games, it's pretty much the same way. If we don't like it we don't play it. Why should we subject ourselves to the monotony of the 450th FPS to come out this week or an 80-100 hour RPG where your weapon breaks down?! Easy. We don't. If you don't like sardines you don't eat them. Dave's Take: This is a real serious problem nowadays. I'm glad Naomi isn't TOO bad with her workphone, but it still pisses me off that she's required to answer it for stupid shit on her days off. Really annoying. But one of the suggestions I might try is the separate user accounts for different uses; it sounds like a good idea. There's also a comment here which made me take a step back and re-evaluate my choice of phones when I upgrade. Even though I'm a tech junkie, I can see how even a Droid phone might turn into reverse ownership (possessions owning owner) with all the apps and tweaking I could spend hours on. Naomi's not a victim of reverse ownership with her Droid, but I can get a little compulsive with tech. Here's the comment:

"Here's the big one that's missed: Using one phone for both work and Personal? STOP. The smartphone is the biggest contributor to this problem, IMO at least, and one that's ironically easiest to correct. Unless you are paid to be on call, or need to be on call leave your BlackBerry/smartphone/work phone at work and pick up your home phone. Same thing goes the other way. You home phone, unless you don't have a job that demands a smartphone, should be a dumb phone. No, Seriously. Here's why:

If your work phone is a Blackberry/Smartphone - leave it at work, or at least leave it in the car when you get home. Don't have it in your pocket, don't think about it, set clear guidelines on when you'll check it. Get a DUMBPHONE for a personal phone. Why? First: cost - if work already picks up a smartphone data plan, why spend more? No, seriously. Really.. truly.. why? If you need a smartphone well, bam, you've got one in your car. I bet that 99% of the time you won't need one.

It's also oddly freeing not to have email on your phone. You aren't constantly distracted by the buzzing, or constantly tempted to look. Hell, get the right phone and you won't even be tempted to text. Guess what happens? If someone really needs you - they call. And unless you are some social magnate or decide to give your phone number out to a ton of people (more on that in a second) - you won't get many calls. Instead of the phone, you'll be able to be truly social. You can hike. You can play with the kids. YOU CAN HAVE FUN! with life instead of constantly checking your phone for the newest bit of useless information or work.

This is now all truly possible. Give only your closest people your dumbphone number, everyone else give either your work cell or your Google Voice number. They can text, call, and whatever all that they want - but you can be free. Give several chosen, trusted co-workers your personal number with the explicit instructions that it's only to be used in the case of emergency, letting your boss know of the very same thing. If your job doesn't like that - tough love here - find a new one because your job, frankly, sucks. If they value you they won't bother you on your time away, and they will respect your decision.

I went that route for a year, then I did something stupid: I bought an iPhone for my personal phone. My freedom and sanity slowly disappeared as I began to check tons of useless apps on it. Then texted friends. Then texted work friends. Then I setup my work email account. AND THEN I got rid of it because it was pointless, now back to just using my BlackBerry for everything.

Is this all harried, hard to understand, scattered and off? It's because my stress level is beyond measure, I'm constantly working, and have no real separation between work and home.

This afternoon I'm going to get a Nextel tough-as-a-brick dumbphone activated on my personal account, and then my BlackBerry is getting left in my truck for the weekend. I know work doesn't care - they've outright said it - and I trust 3 people who will call me if it really is an emergency.

Check back with me in a week, and I'm sure I'll be sane again. I won't have a black chain in my pocket or on my belt, and I don't give a damn what people think of my brick of a Nextel phone. Why? It's a freedom brick, that's why."

Now like I said, Naomi's not at risk with her choice of phone (which is admirable), but I'll at least make a concerted effort to turn the damn thing off sometimes.Red Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09644179738491748729noreply@blogger.com0
